Poverty is not just physical. For many, it is a mindset, a belief that we must wait for someone to come and help us. Dependency sets in meaning individuals and whole communities are trapped in suffering, believing that they are powerless to bring change. We see this again and again in rural communities across sub-Saharan Africa. People waiting for an NGO or aid organisation to come and bring help. Many times, nobody is coming or, if they do come, they just come for a while and then leave.

Instead of bringing help from OUTSIDE a community, Dignity raises up people WITHIN a community to fight poverty. Starting with hearts and minds, and based on Biblical principles, we enable people to see that they are valuable, placed in their communities for a purpose, and that together they can be powerful agents of change. We have seen people identify the needs of their own communities and work together to respond to these. As poverty of mind is broken, so too physical poverty is pushed back.
