Debate Mate tackles educational disadvantage in Britain’s most deprived communities. We do this by recruiting and training university students to run after school debate clubs - increasing speaking and listening, leadership, core confidence and raises aspirations of every student we meet.

    Situation

Debate Mate was founded over 10 years ago as a charity to tackle high rates of social immobility in the UK, of which it is the worst of the OECD countries. At its core, Debate Mate sets up and runs after school debating clubs in areas of highest child poverty, reaching over 7,000 students a week in London, Manchester, Leeds, Bristol, Liverpool, Nottingham and Birmingham.

    Solution

Debate Mate tackles this problem by helping every student on the programme to develop key employability skills, critical and creative thinking, improve teamwork, create interpersonal communication skills and build the core confidence they need to become exceptional young leaders. We achieve this through a peer mentoring scheme, in which the brightest university students become aspirational and motivating figures in our students lives.
