WWF is working to protect the Amazon, the world’s largest rainforest and most biodiverse place on Earth. It is in more danger than ever before, thanks to rapid deforestation, and this summer we saw huge devastation as a result of deliberate fires, started to clear land for agriculture.

This year we saw unprecedented fires caused by mass deforestation, putting wildlife and indigenous communities in danger – a direct result of soaring deforestation rates to illegally claim land or prepare land for agriculture. The Amazon is in greater danger than ever before. One-fifth of the world’s most biodiverse rainforest has disappeared in the past 50 years alone and unchecked deforestation will lead to a point of no return, when the forest can no longer sustain itself.
Solution
WWF wants to protect more areas of the rainforest and its wildlife, keep rivers free-flowing and clean for migratory species like Amazon river dolphins and giant catfish, and conserve habitats for jaguars to roam freely. By ensuring that forest and freshwater are managed for the benefit of local people and the health of our climate, we can make sure the tipping point of deforestation is never reached, and make a positive step in the fight against global warming.
