We are raising funds to pay full fees for professional and vocational courses, exams and registration fees for impoverished refugees and asylum seekers settled across the UK. This will enable them to gain the skills and qualifications needed to gain employment in the UK and contribute to society.

    Situation

We do not have the funds to pay full costs for vocational and professional courses costing over £500 (our maximum grant is £500). So refugees and asylum seekers on minimum incomes cannot always use our grants because they cannot fund the difference. For example, a course for overseas dentists to work in the UK costs £900, interpreting exam fees cost £680, a plumbing course costs £700, the Occupational English Test for Healthcare professionals costs £800.

    Solution

We would like to raise the maximum amount we award to up to £1,000 for the most financially vulnerable refugees and asylum seekers on professional vocational courses so we can give the full amount where the applicant has made an excellent case and has also provided excellent references. This is the criterion for all applicants. We have found that our policy of awarding full rather than part fees for English and other courses costing £500 or less has resulted in a much better take up rate.
