    Situation

More than one billion people in the world are living without safe drinking water. Sub-Saharan Africa is the worst affected and over five million people in Zimbabwe who are currently without access to clean reliable drinking water. This is especially critical at poor rural schools where a lack of clean water on site often means that girls are excluded from classes as they are sent long distances to collect water.

    Solution

70 Elephant Pumps will be installed in poor rural villages along with associated health and hygiene education and training related to pump use and maintenance. The success of this project will be measurable according to the number of people who gain sustainable access to clean water supplies and other benefits such as improved sanitation and increased income from productive use of the water source for nutrition gardens and planting fruit trees.
