2 million adults and children in London experience food insecurity. We rescue surplus food and deliver to over 350 charities and primary schools supporting vulnerable people across London – enough food for 6.5 million meals this year.

    Situation

Daily, more than 8 million people in the UK struggle to afford to eat whilst annually, our food industry wastes 100k tonnes of edible food. Charities and services provide food for children during the school day but families are often unable to provide fresh food at home. 70,000 children arrive daily in London schools without breakfast and research shows a hungry child loses one hour of learning time a day. A poor diet effects behaviour, concentration and mood and therefore academic achievement.

    Solution

We aim to reduce food poverty by redistributing surplus food. Our Schools Programme, launched in 2018, provides ‘market stalls’ in London primary schools enabling families to regularly take healthy food home. Felix staff and volunteers work with teachers so they can promote the benefits of the programme throughout the school and to families. Feedback has been overwhelmingly positive and by December 2019 we will support 120 schools reaching around 50,000 children and their families.
