A young carer is aged between 5-17yrs. They take on responsibility to look after a family member who has a long-term illness, disability, mental health condition or substance misuse. We want to provide more opportunities for young carers to get a break and meet other children in similar situations

    Situation

Young Carers are children caring for loved-ones with conditions including MS, cancer, epilepsy, mental health conditions, arthritis, alcoholism and heart disease. Caring when young can be positive but we know also that it can have a significant impact on emotional wellbeing, educational chances and work opportunities. Furthermore we are seeing an increase in Young Carers referred to us who themselves have additional needs such as autism or anxiety conditions which require specialist support.

    Solution

When Young Carers are supported, they realise their own individual potential and see opportunities for their future life. Most Young Carers we meet have never before been introduced to anyone in the same situation as them. They tell us they have felt isolated and different from their peers. Young Carers tell us that they greatly benefit from having time out for fun, relaxation and meeting others. We will increase social activities for Young Carers with a focus on meeting those with special needs
