We need an Innowalk to enable children and young people with complex physical disabilities and health needs to exercise out of their wheelchairs. This specialist piece of equipment would give them the chance to move their arms and legs, and would be excellent for their health and wellbeing.

    Situation

We support children and young adults with complex physical disabilities and health needs. All rely on using a wheelchair for all or some of the day. This limits their ability to exercise in a way that others take for granted. This can have a negative impact on their muscle strength and bone density. Minimal access to exercise also negatively impacts sleep, bladder control, joint flexibility, appetite and digestion and can increase the risk of hip dislocation.

    Solution

An Innowalk would help the young people we support to have greater access to exercise. Similar in appearance to a cross-trainer, this motor operated motion therapy device would give them the chance to move their legs and arms in both sitting and standing positions. We recently had an Innowalk on loan and the feedback from teachers, physiotherapists and parents has been hugely positive. By having our own Innowalk, young people would be able to use it regularly and gain long-term health benefits.
