Currently in Ethiopia, women exiting safe houses are at risk of returning to the situations of violence that forced them to flee. Our project seeks to establish support groups of fellow survivors to help ex-safe house residents reintegrate into society and continue to live free from violence.

    Situation

In Ethiopia, violence against women and girls (VAWG) continues to be a major challenge and threat to women’s rights. Women and girls face physical, emotional, and sexual abuses that undermine their lives and livelihoods. Those who choose to leave situations of violence, often can never return to the same communities and must build new networks and careers to live independently. However, an inadequate service provision for survivors is consequently keeping women in cycles of violence and poverty.

    Solution

For women to live free from violence they need to know their rights, have access to support systems and a secure income of their own. Monthly meetings for ex-residents have already proven popular at the safe house. By formalising the group and strengthening its capacity to provide members with the support and resources to live independently, it can continue to grow as a ‘safe space’ for women looking to rebuild their lives after trauma.
