Musical talent is everywhere but opportunity isn’t: family finances and other obstacles too often get in the way. We change this in two key ways. We support young musicians from low income families, with funding and other help and the music education sector, through training, advocacy and research.

    Situation

We believe that all musically talented young people should have the opportunity to fulfil their potential, whatever their background. However, the financial costs of supporting talent is high. Excelling at a musical instrument doesn’t just start and end with tuition. Families also need to cover other costs such as instruments, examination and audition fees and travel for attending courses. These costs can create huge obstacles for families already struggling in a challenging economic climate.

    Solution

Our Awards programme is means-tested and funding is kept as flexible as possible: our key criteria are musical talent and financial need. In 2018, the average gross annual income of successful applicants was £18,918, clearly evidencing families’ need for our help. Receiving an Award opens the door to a bespoke portfolio of support. Award winners don’t just receive financial assistance - they also benefit from access to musical opportunities such as performance opportunities and mentoring.
