The hourly chime of bells is a familiar sound across the city of Lichfield, but few people know the physical effort which goes into winding the Cathedral clock every day. Lichfield Cathedral would like to automate its clock, so that it is able to function for the 21st century and we will connect people to this unknown heritage object.

    Situation

The chime of bells every hour is a familiar sound across the city of Lichfield, but few people know the physical effort which goes into winding the clock each and every day. The Cathedral clock was built in 1891 and is housed in the bell tower, accessible only by 60 steep steps. A Cathedral Verger has to spend an hour every day turning the clock 126 times. This all poses a health and safety risk and discriminates against who can become a Verger as they have to be physically fit enough to do it.

    Solution

The funds we raise will pay for the installation of an automatic winding system, which will remove the need for us to manually wind the clock every day.
