You Make It is a holistic empowerment programme for young working-class, unemployed & underemployed women. Our founding CEO, Asma Shah established YMI from her kitchen table because she had experienced her own journey in overcoming barriers to achieve and felt compelled to help others do the same.

    Situation

There are significant challenges and practical barriers to employment amongst working-class, Black and Asian women across East London boroughs. The realities of structural racism have meant that Black and Asian young people are 2.5 times as likely to be unemployed than their white peers (Resolution Foundation 2020) and there are a multitude of further barriers including anxiety, depression, lack of networks and low confidence preventing our women from realising and fulfilling their potential.

    Solution

We deliver holistic empowerment programmes to young, largely Black & Asian women, all from working-class backgrounds (unemployed/underemployed) to ensure they grasp their agency, build new social and professional networks, and take hold of life’s opportunities. Our 4-month long programmes offer women 1-1 therapy, pastoral care, wellness activities such as yoga, running, cooking and mindfulness classes, mentoring, workshops and work placements.
