Artichoke makes extraordinary art accessible to all with free events in public spaces. We also work with schools and youth groups to run creative activities for young people. We are seeking support to give young people from disadvantaged backgrounds access to life-changing creative opportunities.

    Situation

Children from low-income families are less likely to engage in extracurricular art activities. This means disadvantaged children are missing out on crucial gains like confidence, team spirit and social skills, and are less likely to go on to higher education. A 2019 study found that fear of not fitting in is a big factor, with children as young as 10 feeling that art is ‘not for the likes of them’. After years of under-investment in the arts, inequality is getting worse as living costs rise.

    Solution

We are raising money for a programme of free, creative workshops for young people from low-income families in outer London Boroughs. In Summer 2023, the young people will learn about socially-engaged art and work with a visual artist to create their own artworks. Young people will also be able to create their own artworks at home or in school with an online video tutorial and resource pack. Your support will help more young people from disadvantaged backgrounds to discover their creativity.
