Our vision for Wandsworth is #everychildareader. We are expanding our existing work to support children aged 0 to 11 years. We help young children start school ready to read, primary children build a love of reading as well as reading skills, and parents support their children’s learning at home.

    Situation

Reduced access to early childhood education and care during the pandemic, together with lockdowns and school closures, have had a hugely negative impact on early development, communication and social skills, and literacy levels in young children. Poor reading skills in childhood generally result in limited literacy in adults, bringing well-recognised risks of unemployment, low wages, obesity and depression. Outcomes are poor for those who never get to grips with the written word.

    Solution

We give parents the motivation, skills and confidence to support their children’s reading at home. We introduce babies and toddlers to vital early literacy skills - running classes, distributing reading packs and delivering helpful messaging and advice. We build partnerships with local schools and charities to give children, regardless of background, the opportunity to have frequent positive reading experiences - training and supporting a team of committed volunteer reading supporters.
