The bee keeping project helps families in Kimilili rural Kenya living in poverty. Communities are supplied with bee hives, protective bee-keeping suits, equipment, training in the handling of bees, harvesting honey, processing and branding. They generate an income through sales and benefit from the nutritious food source.

    Situation

People in Kimilili are living in poverty, it is a typical rural Kenyan town where casual workers earn an average of £1.50-£2 a day. Many people have little or no employment, living as best they can off a small piece of land. Earning enough for the very basics such as education and health care are almost impossible. Many families cannot afford to send their children to school regularly, so they stay at home to help farm the land. Food is scarce, lacking in nutrition and medical needs cannot be met.

    Solution

By providing communities with locally made beehives, equipment and the associated support we can help them to earn the equivalent of approximately £90 per year per beehive. When established and successful, families will pay back a small percentage of the income generated from each honey harvest, this money will then be put back into the project to help provide more beehives to more families. This will help to ensure sustainability and enable us to expand the project accordingly.
