Like Milton, we are living in extraordinary times. We are in the midst of an information revolution that is transforming how we receive and share information. Today’s TikTok and Instagram influencers are the inheritors of C17 pamphleteers, such as Milton - whose writing helped shape our democracy.

    Situation

Social media has made us more connected than at any time in history. Despite this, research shows that high use of social media can be linked to loneliness, anxiety and depression. It has also resulted in a pandemic of disinformation, and young people in the UK are not being taught the skills they need to spot fake news, disinformation, misinformation and more – making it harder for them to interpret the wealth of online information available to them.

    Solution

We believe a re-examination of Milton’s extraordinary political pamphlets can help the post-truth generation explore issues of authenticity, truth and freedom of expression. In an era of uncertainty, social anxiety and rapid change - when disinformation can be spread with the swipe of a finger - we want to make Milton’s Cottage a place where the impact of social media can be explored in a historic, literary and social context, supporting health and well-being in the process.
