Our mission as a charity is to alleviate loneliness and social isolation; improve physical health and mental wellbeing and to make communities stronger through volunteering. Our social, exercise and activity groups, as well as our specialist groups for those living with dementia, are a central part of our offer to our service users. To facilitate their attendance, we also provide transport in the form of taxis and volunteer drivers to enable people to attend.

    Situation

Research carried out by Age UK and the Alzheimer’s Society highlighted that older people and those living with a diagnosis of dementia had been particularly adversely affected by social isolation during the periods of restrictions. 25% of respondents to our service user survey said that they still feel nervous about the pandemic. We are working hard to encourage people to re-engage with our groups and activities in ways that they feel comfortable and able to.

    Solution

Our service users have previously told us that with the lifting of restrictions, returning to our groups was one of the things that they were most looking forward to. To accommodate as many service users as possible we are looking to expand our groups offer, to have groups that run for longer periods of time and, with the cost of living crisis in mind we are keen to host more groups that offer a hot meal.
