Over 60,000 babies are born too soon in the UK each year. Despite being the single biggest cause of childhood death in the UK, premature birth remains an underfunded and overlooked area. Vital research is needed to find new interventions that will stop babies from being born before they are ready.

    Situation

Premature birth is the leading cause of childhood death worldwide and has a lifelong impact on the babies who survive. They are more likely to develop chronic illness, disability and struggle with education. Every day in the UK, 164 babies are born prematurely and yet 85% of women who experience premature birth had no idea they were at risk. We need to find a way to keep babies in the womb for longer yet only 2.4% of UK health research funding is invested in pregnancy. We do not know enough.

    Solution

We focus on finding new interventions to stop babies from being born too soon. We foster scientific collaboration and partnerships between specialisations and institutions that advance collective knowledge, bridging the gaps to make breakthroughs possible. Strengthen the early stage research base by nurturing talent and accelerating career development, quickening discovery. Raise awareness of premature birth and its consequences and how research plays a pivotal role in its prevention.
