The John Schofield Trust supports people with the talent and drive to become journalists but no connections or advantages. We're starting a new mentoring scheme so students from diverse backgrounds can benefit from the support, mentoring and encouragement of experienced journalists.

    Situation

Survey after survey shows us how unrepresentative and undiverse UK journalism is. Despite a growing awareness within the news industry that major change is needed to secure the recruitment, retention and development of staff from diverse backgrounds, approaches to the problem are piecemeal. We will create the first UK-wide mentoring programme for students to support candidates from diverse backgrounds to enter the news industry.

    Solution

Our pilot mentoring programme will connect talented young students who want to become journalists with professional journalists for support, mentoring and encouragement during the crucial period that bridges college or university and work. It will offer something new in the UK: a national remit, a diversity focus and strong industry connections. Participation will be based on application: successful candidates will be selected on merit, diversity and social mobility criteria.
