Each day human rights defenders speak out they risk attack, abduction, and assassination. Over 350 defenders were murdered for their peaceful human rights work in 2021, and thousands more faced threats and violence from those who benefit from an unjust status quo. The defenders most at risk are also often the ones with the fewest resources working on grassroots campaigns such as the protection of sacred Indigenous land, securing LGBT+ rights, and upholding the rule of law.
Solution
Every day, we help people to safely claim their rights. We work in partnership with community activists to protect and support them as they demand human rights, peace, and justice. We run innovative training programmes that strengthen their skills and security so they can grow their movements, campaign to change the laws and practices that put activists at risk, work with our legal experts to provide pro bono support and amplify their demands and expertise to find solutions to global crises.
