Disadvantaged young people do not have the same life chances as their peers and the cost-of-living crisis is making this worse, with many now worried about the future. We aim to equip more young people with the skills and self-worth needed to reach their potential, via our life-changing voyages.

    Situation

The Children’s Commissioner states that 31% of children in the UK are living in poverty. Growing up in poverty does have a negative effect on self-esteem, wellbeing and future prospects. The cost-of-living crisis is exacerbating this issue, making it impossible for these young people to access the same opportunities and support as their peers. However, our youth development work can enable them to develop self-esteem, resilience and a range of skills to help them overcome barriers and thrive.

    Solution

This campaign will enable more disadvantaged young people to benefit from a life-changing voyage. Onboard, they will live and work together, taking part in all aspects of sailing the vessel. Successfully completing a task builds confidence and develops skills (communication, teamwork and problem-solving), which can be transferred to daily life. Completing unpopular tasks, (e.g. cleaning!) builds resilience. After a voyage with us, young people's self-esteem and life chances are transformed.
