    Situation

Children with poor literacy are twice as likely to be unemployed by age 34, and three times more likely to have mental health issues as adults. Compounding this is the impact of recent school closures. Since March 2020, the attainment gap between disadvantaged children and their more privileged peers has widened by as much as 75%. We are working to combat this gap by increasing the capacity of our services and delivering where the need is greatest.

    Solution

We provide a positive, fun learning environment where 9-12 year olds can voice ideas, and practise reading and writing with dedicated adults. We work in areas of high inequality boosting childrens’ literacy skills and confidence. Trained volunteers and experienced teachers support our Young Pirates to become published authors, script writers and podcasters. They make 4 times progress in reading age with us. We are proud of our Young Pirates, and showcase & celebrate their hard work regularly.
