The facility requirements of International Otter Survival Fund's rehabilitation centre, for injured and orphaned otters, vary year on year and we need to be able to adapt to any new challenges through expansion of outdoor facilities and updating of equipment. Giving otters a second chance at life.

    Situation

Coping with the unexpected. The number of otters arriving varies each year, as does their condition and the requirements of the facilities. We mostly care for young orphaned cubs which stay with us until 12-15months old, and older injured otters whose stay is much shorter. Occasionally, otters cannot return to the wild, whether through age or not developing the ability to survive in nature and so require long-term 'accommodation'. We need to ensure, there is care for them without compromise.

    Solution

Ensure we have sufficient outdoor pens for our long-term residents, as well the young cubs that arrive here and will be with us for approximately 12 months, until 12-15 months of age. They also require bigger pens to develop their confidence and abilities for a successful release.
