    Situation

The world can be a miserable place at times, especially post-Covid in the 11th most deprived city in England, where 34% children and 26% of over 60s have income deprivation. When putting food on the table or a roof over your head is priority, culture & well-being become unaffordable. Yet we know it is cultural capital that most lifts self-esteem, self-worth & reduces anxiety. Arts is being squeezed from schools, access barriers are increasing and social cohesion is fragmenting in our city.

    Solution

Research proves the arts improve mental health and reduce loneliness. Music, theatre, dance, writing and more all make a positive difference, a fact well-supported by research and our own data. Since 2016, we've given over 8,000 tickets and 1,000 free workshop places to the most marginalised and disadvantaged people in the city. Open House will provide more cultural experiences so vulnerable adults, sanctuary seekers, women and girls, the young and old can find escapism, grow and feel welcome.
