Create Music is the leading provider of high-quality music education and performance opportunities across East Sussex. This Christmas we are raising funds to offer bursaries to young people (aged 5-19) whose families are on low incomes. Our ambition is to ensure music making is accessible to all.

    Situation

Music-making helps our well-being, helping us to cope with difficult times. But 1 in 5 young people cannot afford to pay for music lessons and instrument hire. We want to make sure there are music-making opportunities for those most in need. Young people say they felt the impact of the pandemic keenly, particularly those from low-income families already in receipt of bursaries. Their bursaries are enabling them to focus on building skills and thinking beyond the current financial crisis.

    Solution

Young people tell us how important their bursaries are, and that this is the only way they can afford lessons. Last year we provided 792 bursaries. We want to provide 850 this year. We work at 262 schools every week and have a close relationship with support teams. Together, we identify young people who can’t afford to pay using a means-testing system. We then provide bursaries for them to develop their skills through tailored programmes of activity. We work with 19,500 young people annually.
