Lack of rain has left farmers and pastoralists in Baringo County unable to grow sufficient food crop to meet the needs of the community, nor to care for livestock. We aim to improve access to water through the rehabilitation of water sources and the use of rain-water harvesting equipment.

    Situation

Baringo County is categorised as ASAL, meaning Arid and Semi-Arid Lands. This means it has unpredictable and variable weather, and is vulnerable to extreme climate events including both drought and flooding. This year, the rains have been very poor, with drought conditions threatening the livelihoods of farmers, pastoralists, and the wider community which relies on the food they produce.

    Solution

One of the biggest risks associated with drought is food insecurity, so households will be supported to use irrigation kits to create kitchen gardens where they can grow their own food. Sanitation is also a major issue, so schools will be supported to store rainwater for use during dryer periods. Lastly, a number of water sources (catchments areas, springs, and boreholes) will be rehabilitated to ensure they can continue to serve the communities which rely on them for water throughout the year.
