    Situation

In rural West Bengal the burden of poverty often falls hardest on women and their children. The women have limited education and few earning prospects. In many cases the husbands have migrated to the cities in search of casual labour and send meagre remittances home.Shivia's Poultry Programme is aimed at women; it allows them to work from home and earn money whilst also caring for the family.Due to Covid, many migrant labourers returned home and lost their jobs, leaving women as the sole earners.

    Solution

Shivia has been running our Poultry Programme since 2011 and we help families - especially women - to earn an income by raising chickens. We provide the tools and training - the ‘toolkit’- for disadvantaged families to start a small enterprise from home and sell the chicken or eggs. Usually after two years, they have an independent poultry enterprise or confidence and know-how to start another enterprise altogether. With both their new income has kept them going through Covid and its aftermath.
