Too many women in rural Ethiopia are suffering in isolation with untreated fistula, a devastating birth injury, not knowing help is available. Our Patient Identification programme in Yirgalem will do vital work searching communities to find women with fistula and get them the treatment they need.

    Situation

When you live a three-hour walk away from the nearest town, in a village with no electricity, accessing health services isn’t easy. Yet this is the reality for pregnant women in rural Ethiopia. Whilst progress has been made in recent years, 70% of women in Ethiopia give birth without a doctor or nurse present. This can result in devastating childbirth injuries including fistula. Too many women are suffering with untreated fistula, not knowing help is available. We are working to change this.

    Solution

Hamlin’s priority is to find and treat all existing and new cases of fistula. Our Patient Identification Officers are searching communities and training community health workers, to find every woman with fistula and help them get the treatment they need. We are finding, treating and caring for women to: •Secure women’s health and wellbeing •Help women regain their roles in their families and communities •Increase national awareness of obstetric fistula and educate people on how to seek treatment
