Women's Health Matters work with women and girls struggling to make their way out of abuse, exploitation, and trauma. To raise awareness of the disadvantages and well-being struggles the women we support face, we will be walking 100k around the city of Leeds in 3 days in a sponsored challenge.

    Situation

21,826 incidents of Domestic Violence were reported in Leeds last year. It is estimated that only 18% of incidents are reported to police, suggesting that the actual number of incidents is above 121,000. 60% of women who experience DV also experience mental health problems. Mental ill-health is increasing amongst young women, with over 26% reporting mental health concerns each week. Women seeking asylum are often deeply traumatised and suffer acute anxiety about the complex asylum process.

    Solution

We specialise in group work, peer support, and providing 1-to-1 support. Our outreach work allows us to reach a wide range of women who have found it difficult to work with statutory services. Our broad health remit enables women experiencing violence and abuse to raise these issues in safety and to receive support without stigma or partner suspicion. We create a safe environment where women can build trusting relationships and begin to recover their health and regain control of their lives.
