    Situation

1 in 3 women will experience domestic abuse in her lifetime, and 1 in 6 men. In 2020/21 Sussex Police recorded 20,800 domestic abuse crimes, with 13,700 identified victims - that's just the cases that were reported. People often are not clear on what constitutes as abuse and are unaware of any support available or have difficulties accessing it, therefore remaining trapped in a violent and dangerous situation. The cyclical nature of abuse means often children grow up to repeat the same patterns.

    Solution

We provide non-discriminatory emergency refuge across 4 refuges in West Sussex and dispersed accommodation for anyone who has been a victim of abuse. Our team supports victims logistically (housing, benefits, judicial etc) and emotionally in order to go on to live a life free from fear. We run several education and outreach programmes spanning all ages, designed to break the cyclical nature of abuse through recognising what abuse is, and by promoting healthy relationships with boundaries.
