We are empowering women’s groups in Sierra Leone to set up regenerative community farms using Inga agroforestry. The trees enable them to improve food security, soil fertility and climate resilience, develop livelihoods and support each other; inspiring others to improve their environment and lives

    Situation

Sierra Leone is the 7th poorest country in the world and households headed by women suffer most. People have extreme food and financial insecurity and women have little financial autonomy unless they can earn their own money. We work in remote communities around the Gola Rainforest where farmers must use ‘slash and burn’ to clear new areas of forest every two years, as the land loses its fertility. Climate change is causing heavy, early rains; flooding crops and increasing erosion.

    Solution

Since 2018 we have helped women to set up community farms. We are introducing Inga agroforestry to these farms, training them in planting and raising trees and alley cropping techniques. Within 3 years the trees will increase farm yields and fertility, reducing erosion and deforestation. Some groups have shown great resilience and creativity in using new income streams from crops to set up microfinance and support schemes. We will train female facilitators from these farms to encourage others
