WEP's mission is women's education, providing education programmes for disadvantaged women and girls in Sudan and South Sudan, many of whom are refugees from violence. We deliver basic schooling for orphans, adult literacy, university scholarships, teacher training and eyecare to enable reading.

    Situation

In Sudan and South Sudan women and girls suffer significant disadvantage in education and life chances. Illiteracy is high among women and girls, orphans struggle to get basic education and disadvantaged students need support to go to university. In South Sudan, civil war has decimated education and health provision. The Covid-19 pandemic also saw the closure of schools and universities – girls are particularly in danger of not returning to education.

    Solution

WEP supports a range of programmes. Our basic school programme enables orphan children to go to school. Our adult literacy programme covers literacy, numeracy & income generation, and our eyecare outreach treats disorders preventing people from reading. Our teacher training programme improves standards in schools. We sponsor university scholarships for disadvantaged young women from displaced populations. In South Sudan we are rebuilding adult literacy and supporting healthcare studies.
