Sr. Joan worked tirelessly for our charity. Her initial promise to raise £300 became £60,000pa. In tribute to her dedication, we will continue to fulfil her aim to enable the villagers of Kanyike in rural Uganda to live self-sufficient lives.

    Situation

90% of the villagers we support live in dire poverty. There are no breadwinners in many families. They cannot even afford school fees of £11 pa or school equipment (2p). We endeavour to help them become self-sufficient; but this will take many years. Keeping them fit and healthy is our priority so we ensure the water supply is clean and take free medical care to them where possible. We encourage saving and operate a loan scheme to kick start enterprise. This gives hope for a brighter future.

    Solution

We support all, especially families without breadwinners. A free porridge lunch is given to orphans at a cost of £12 pa. We train young men in leatherworking: the high quality goods they produce sell well and are easy to take to markets. Through the loan scheme, families can buy and breed animals to sell, or set up a small business providing catering services, for example. The education begun at Magejjo Primary School will lift many out of poverty. For 35 years, lives have been transformed.
