Re-engage works with older people aged 75+ who have become extremely isolated, providing social connections in their local communities or over the phone. With the help of our dedicated volunteers, we provide regular meaningful companionship to tackle loneliness and change lives for the better.

    Situation

There are 2.2 million people aged 75+ who live alone in the UK, many of them experiencing near constant loneliness. It is not unusual for older people living alone to regularly spend up to six days without seeing or speaking to anyone. Being lonely is miserable, but it can also have a severe impact on physical health and mental wellbeing: lonely people are more likely to suffer from clinical dementia, heart disease and depression.

    Solution

We provide isolated older people with treasured opportunities to socialise. Our services are free and designed to encourage strong, long-term friendships to blossom between people of all ages. We offer telephone befriending, tea party groups, activity groups and companionship over Christmas. The regular contact with our volunteers has a remarkable impact on the wellbeing of older people, leading to increased confidence, happiness and a marked reduction in feelings of loneliness.
