Lichfield Cathedral is fundraising for a major restoration of its central spire. This will ensure the safety of the building for worshippers and other community users in the future, and will preserve the iconic view of three spires from across the city.

    Situation

The Cathedral has known for some time that some restoration of the central spire was on the horizon. However, repairs became much more urgent in March 2019: during the high winds of Storm Gareth, a large piece of stone became dislodged. As a result, popular Tower Tours which took visitors right beneath the spire were cancelled, and temporary shoring has been required until the necessary funds are raised to carry out the repairs.

    Solution

The restoration will involve masonry repairs to all elevations of the spire, with defective stones to be removed and new stone pieces installed. Following Storm Gareth, the Architect completed an inspection of the lower spire and we commissioned a rope access company to undertake an inspection of the upper spire. We also commissioned a detailed stone-by-stone survey of the entire spire, using 3D scanning and SfM photogrammetry, enabling the Architect to mark up the extent of repairs.
