    Situation

A local Christie phlebotomy service will reduce the need for our patients to travel long distances to The Christie in Withington, which will save time and costs. Patients require a routine blood test before having outpatient systemic anti-cancer therapies (SACT) and also as part of clinical reviews and follow ups. With a blood test on one day and a treatment appointment on another, a patient has to visit The Christie twice during the week of their treatment, which is both tiring and costly.

    Solution

Over the last 2 years a pilot service has been offered to patients already attending our SACT outreach services. The pilot service has been well received and feedback from these patients is that most would prefer to receive all their treatment closer to home. We plan to open 20 new blood testing clinics across Greater Manchester and Cheshire in addition to the phlebotomy service at The Christie. Couriers will collect the samples and return them to The Christie pathology department for analysis.
