We need your help to transform a crumbling old church into The Lucky Chance, a new arts space for Somerset. The Lucky Chance will be Wise Children’s home - where we’ll create work and run The School for Wise Children - as well as a thriving community arts hub and an intimate, atmospheric venue.

    Situation

Wise Children needs a home. Since launching in 2018, we’ve been nomadic - and have enjoyed that freedom. But the pandemic changed things. We need a base to make and share work, live and online, even when theatres can’t open. We also want to play a part in addressing issues of access to the arts in Somerset. Three of its districts are Government ‘levelling up for culture places’, with high levels of deprivation, low levels of arts funding and, unsurprisingly, little public engagement with art.

    Solution

Last month, The Times placed Tristan & Yseult amongst its top 25 shows of the century, saying ‘Emma Rice is one of the country’s most invigorating theatre-makers.’ In 2019, she received the UKT Award for Contribution to British Theatre. Led by Emma, Wise Children makes extraordinary, beloved shows, which tour nationally and overseas. By establishing a base in Somerset, where she and the team live, we will ensure that local people have access to the world-class work being made in their midst.
