We are training and developing heritage engineering skills with the restoration of a historic steam loco as the platform. We need to source a new chimney, safety valve cover and buffers - the project will provide development opportunities and pave the way for further training projects for volunteers

    Situation

The heritage sector contributes massively to local economies. Heritage railways need working historic machinery to fulfil their role as living museums. The sector relies on trained volunteers to survive and many tend to be an older, largely male generation with traditional skills that are no longer mainstream and increasingly rare. We need to attract and train a new generation so that the skills and experience can be passed on. We also need to attract a more diverse volunteer workforce.

    Solution

Use restoration of steam loco as platform for new volunteers to be trained in basics and where more experienced can enhance skills. Building on a Lottery funded training programme to provide specific work projects with a range of tasks to facilitate basic training for new volunteers and more advanced for development purposes. Specific project will involve volunteers in sourcing and assembly of the items with basic and developmental aspects. Use our website to showcase ladies working in sector
