    Situation

Stammering is a neurodevelopmental condition (DSM-5, 2013) that affects up to 8% of children at some time. For at least 1% their stammer will persist. It can cause major set-backs,affecting home and school life. Children who stammer face misunderstanding and hostility. Even pre-pandemic stammering was found to be associated with adverse mental health in children. Research is showing a post-pandemic rise in children's mental health problems which will need to be addressed in children who stammer.

    Solution

We will provide specialist assessments and tailored therapy for children who stammer. Therapy programmes not only address spoken fluency but also self-confidence and emotional wellbeing. This is particularly important now while children are overcoming the effects of isolation during the pandemic, and catching up on lost time at school. We will help children overcome the set-backs caused by stammering so that they have the same life chances as their non-stammering peers.
