This campaign has now closed

1 in 8 households in Bristol are experiencing food insecurity and this is expected to rise. Square Food Foundation is raising funds to tackle this problem at its root. Help us provide more than 2,000 families with recipe meal kits this winter. Our kits contain fresh ingredients to make a healthy meal from scratch and equip families with knowledge of basic nutrition and tips for cooking economically and efficiently.

    Situation

Together, the pandemic, supply chain issues and the cost of living crisis have highlighted how fragile our food systems are. Without basic food preparation skills, people are forced to buy cheap food with little nutritional value, produced using methods that are environmentally damaging. By making healthy eating principles, basic skills and access to good quality food available to all, we can build resilience and address some of the physical and mental health challenges that our society faces.

    Solution

We know we can’t achieve our mission alone. We use our own resources to teach practical cookery skills to marginalised people from South Bristol including older people that are isolated, adults with learning disabilities and young people not in work or education. We deliver professional teacher training courses to cooks, teachers and community leaders to create a city-wide network of skilled food educators. We signpost groups from different parts of the city to other food education providers. And since lockdown, we now also deliver over 120 recipe kits to low-income families every week providing a free, nutritious meal and knowledge about how to cook economically and efficiently.
