In Uganda's remote village of Nkuringo, women spend hours each day walking for water. Pregnant women are unable to access healthcare in pregnancy and birth. Your help will install community water tanks to reduce women's walk for water, while providing lifesaving health information.

    Situation

Women are responsible for collecting water. Pregnant women in Nkuringo spend more time walking for water than accessing vital healthcare in pregnancy and birth. Women's daily walk is time consuming and physically demanding. Walking for water and returning carrying a 40-pound jerrycan is dangerous for pregnant women. Pregnant women do not have access to maternal health care for a safe and healthy birth. For a healthy pregnancy, women need access to safe water closer to home.

    Solution

We will help pregnant women get access to water. Community water tanks will help decrease the time and frequency women spend walking for water. During the rainy season, water tanks will capture and store water that pours off village roofs. We will improve awareness of the importance of water to the health and wellbeing of women and their babies during pregnancy and after. Working with the local health authority, we will improve community support for maternal health services in Nkuringo.
