    Situation

LGBT+ young people are far more likely to experience poor mental health than their non-LGBT+ peers. Our research shows LGBT+ young people are twice as likely to experience bullying, depression, anxiety, panic attacks and suicidal thoughts, and are three times more likely to self-harm. They also feel far less safe in school. In fact, half of pupils (48%) have received little to zero positive messaging about being LGBT+ at school.

    Solution

Our research shows that positive messaging in schools about being LGBT+ is linked to improved mental health, with LGBT+ young people being less likely to experience suicidal thoughts. We bring this positive messaging into schools, through our programmes, which improve their mental wellbeing. We run a school speaker programme, delivering talks championing LGBT+ equality; we help teachers & students to set up LGBT+ & ally clubs; & we run the national celebration of LGBT+ inclusion in education.
