United Kingdom

The pandemic and increasingly hostile government policies have exacerbated the multiple challenges faced by young refugees. Many of those we support are here in the UK, alone, without their families. On arrival, they are frequently disbelieved about their age and experiences. Prolonged delays to legal decisions often mean living in limbo for many years, in unsuitable accommodation and unable to rebuild their lives, experiencing intense anxiety, isolation, fragile mental health and destitution.

We often meet young people when they are newly arrived in the UK, providing vital support at the earliest opportunity. Our trauma-informed approach decreases stress and anxiety, preventing escalation of need and further psychological distress. The trusted relationships we develop with young people ensure they feel ready and able to access the support they need. Our Casework service resolves urgent issues quickly and effectively and our youth programme, a sense of belonging and connectedness.

  • I feel happier because I meet new people and try out different activities. I feel calmer and safer as I know if I have any problems YR will be able to help me or point me in the right direction. I also feel more settled as I do not feel like a stranger anymore. I feel that I belong.

    — Senait, aged 17, from Eritrea

  • I would say I have become a better version of my self-compared to the last 6 months. I used to overthink, depressed, and felt upset most of the time. After joining Young Roots I can talk about my problems, and they are good listeners. I am not judged but also, we respect each other like a family.

    — Zahra, aged 21, from Iraq

  • I still get worried and confused but I feel much better than I did 6 months ago [when I first came to Young Roots]. I feel safer and thanks to Young Roots, I now have somewhere to stay...

    — Young Person, 2022

  • (They provide) excellent wrap-around support for young people. They allow for friend-making, casework & therapy to happen in a supportive environment and allow for some needs to be quickly met, and challenges to be worked through [...]. I know that young people feel very safe there which is vital.
