Five Talents enables communities across eastern Africa, marginalised by poverty, to LEARN, EARN, SAVE and INVEST together through community Savings Groups. It costs c.£30 to support one Savings Group member for a year. We aim to raise £30,000 to reach 1,000 NEW members and their families.

Situation
Across the countries where we work in eastern Africa, over 152 million people live on less than $1.90 a day: living hand-to-mouth and experiencing high levels of food insecurity, illiteracy, poor health and marginalisation. Those most impacted are usually women, and consequently children. This is further made worse by climate change, where prolonged droughts and recurrent flooding have led to loss of livelihoods, homes and lives and increased incidences of intercommunal conflicts.
Solution
Communities are at the heart of our partnership programmes. We support the formation of community-led Literacy and Savings Groups where members: LEARN literacy, financial stewardship and business skills. EARN by developing a business and generating a sustained income. SAVE together, building resilience against shocks and; INVEST through lending to one-another from their Group’s savings pot. Through this, communities achieve their own change; restoring dignity, confidence and independence.
