During the summer holidays children can become isolated and inactive and are at risk of antisocial behaviour on the streets. Parents and carers on low income struggle to find affordable, safe childcare. The Play scheme at The Winch is there So Every Child Can play, create and explore with friends.

    Situation

The Winch serves an area where child poverty is a persistent, ongoing problem. Summer holidays are times when parents and carers on low incomes rely on safe, affordable childcare to keep working and manage personal finances. Children can become isolated, inactive and are at risk of antisocial behaviour on the streets. Following the hardships of the pandemic, children deserve fun holiday memories, healthy food and opportunities to develop skills and confidence outside of school.

    Solution

The Winch offers low-cost, subsidised holiday play schemes where children can play, make friends and develop character strengths. Sessional staff support arts+crafts, gym, drama, and cooking to provide a good range of activities for more children. They also supervise our Adventure Play, take children and young people on trips and support healthy eating too. Our core team's size means we need extra staff to meet high demand over summer and to be open and responsive to our children's needs.
