    Situation

We are in the midst of climate and nature emergencies. Since 1970, the UK has seen 41% of species decline, making it one of the most nature-depleted countries in the world. Devon traditionally enjoyed an abundance of rural and coastal wildlife. However, intensive agriculture, fishing, and tourism have led to degraded soils, flooding, pollution, erosion, poor water quality, plastic pollution, and loss of habitat and biodiversity; while many local people have become disconnected from nature.

    Solution

Devon is the perfect place to test and scale Nature-based Solutions to address the climate and nature emergencies, while enhancing human health and wellbeing. It is one of the largest, least densely populated counties in Britain. With two shores, two moors, and swathes of green space in between, there are an abundance of untapped opportunities to live and work in more harmony with nature. There are also many inspiring grassroots projects and innovations to protect and restore nature in Devon.
