ECCR will work with individuals and communities across the UK to raise awareness of how to engage the world of banking and finance in tackling environmental problems like plastic pollution. We will equip people to make greener financial choices and to call on their banks to take action where they are investing in polluting companies.

    Situation

The UK's biggest banks and investors are responsible for 1.8 more carbon emissions than the UK as a whole. Greening the finance sector is vital to tackling the climate crisis. A UK government survey found that over 70% of people want their investments to achieve good for people and the planet, but awareness of sustainable finance remains low. Our research shows that while people consider environmental issues around their spending, few apply these ethics to their banking or pension choices.

    Solution

Building on the success of our Green your Money engagement campaign, which reached over 270,000 people through social media in 2021, we will provide resources and training to individuals and communities on how to connect their finances with the environmental issues they care about. This will consist of in-person and online workshops and training, collaborations with climate groups, dissemination of resources and articles, and a major campaign on the role of banks in financing plastic pollution.
