We wish to work on dune stabilisation in 11 villages in order to sustain their farming livelihoods. Their soil is being covered in sand so that they can no longer grow crops. This is forcing people to migrate and causing conflict. The area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

    Situation

Sand dunes are moving onto extremely fertile valley farming land due to increased winds and more frequent sandstorms. Over 70% of soil in the villages has already been covered in sand or become too poor to grow crops. This is forcing people to leave their homes and over half the population has already had to migrate.

    Solution

We have worked on dune stabilisation in Mali since 2013 and have stabilised over 800 hectares of dunes. We do this by initially using dead hedgerow for windbreak planting, and euphorbia cuttings. This is followed by deep-rooting grasses and tree planting. Our work has protected farming plots, reduced wind, and the dune areas are now productive, useful areas with restored ecosystems and wildlife. We have become well-known for our dune stabilisation work and won an award.
