We want to ReNature the South Downs. At the moment, 25% of the National Park is managed for nature. Our goal is to increase that to 33% by 2030. This will add an extra 13,000 hectares managed for nature.

    Situation

The recent “State of Nature” Report showed that since 1971 35% of all species have declined, 13% of all our species are threatened from extinction. This is also true of National Parks, despite our protections, we have seen our own special sites decline in quantity and quality. However, and now for the hope, we can be world beating in habitat restoration too. This is what we now want to achieve through our ReNature campaign in the South Downs.

    Solution

This will mean turning poor arable land over to nature, converting our abandoned golf courses to woodland pasture, sparing our farming field margins and re-naturalising our rivers. The words ReNature are very intentional, whilst we welcome rewilding, that will not be possible everywhere. It will require unique and varied approaches to help biodiversity flourish, ultimately creating a mosaic of varied habitats. We are creating a dedicated fund to enable projects delivering these aims.
