Honeygar is a pioneering project to restore nature and lock up carbon. Previously a dairy farm, Honeygar borders the River Brue in the heart of Somerset’s internationally important wetlands. Our vision is to see nature return by rewetting peat soils and wilding the land to create quality habitats.

    Situation

Despite being known as a green county, just 10% of Somerset is in good natural or semi-natural condition. Our goal is for this to be 30% by 2030. Honeygar’s strategic location, in the heart of the Avalon Marshes and Somerset, means it will help nature spread across the entire landscape and show others another way to manage lowland peat that is good for nature and the climate. We need to raise £3.4m to buy the land, rewet the peat and set up our Honeygar project, and have already secured £2.1m.

    Solution

With support from philanthropists and grants, we have bought Honeygar, but now the work of restoring the land begins. We will wild the site, reduce artificial drainage and rewet the precious peat. This should transform this nature-poor dairy farm and its drained peat into a healthy, carbon sink supporting greater biodiversity. Extensive monitoring of carbon, water quality and species will mean we know the impact of these changes, which we will share widely to increase the impact of Honeygar.
